Pakistan, Saudi Arabia Ink Historic Strategic Agreement Bilateral Defence Ties Elevated to a New Era of Cooperation

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has concluded his state visit to Saudi Arabia, during which Pakistan and the Kingdom signed a landmark Strategic Mutual Defence Agreement at Al-Yamamah Palace. The accord declares that “any aggression against either country shall be considered an aggression against both,” solidifying a new era of military cooperation. Building on nearly eight decades of close partnership, the agreement seeks to strengthen deterrence, expand joint defence efforts, and promote regional and global security. According to a joint statement, the pact reflects the two nations’ shared commitment to advancing peace and stability beyond their borders. A Saudi official clarified that the agreement was not a response to any immediate event but underscored the continuity of a longstanding strategic relationship. The signing ceremony came amid heightened regional tensions, including Israeli strikes on Qatar, further elevating the importance of the pact.
During talks with Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, the Prime Minister praised his leadership and vision, highlighting Riyadh’s consistent support for Islamabad in times of need. The Crown Prince and Premier reviewed regional challenges while exploring avenues for cooperation in defence, trade, and investment. In a rare gesture, Saudi Air Force jets escorted the Prime Minister’s aircraft upon its entry into Saudi airspace, followed by a guard of honour by Saudi Armed Forces. The Pakistani delegation included Chief of Army Staff Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir, underscoring the strategic nature of the visit. For decades, Pakistani military trainers have contributed to Saudi defence, while Riyadh has extended crucial financial assistance during Pakistan’s economic crises. Before departing for London, PM Shehbaz expressed gratitude for Saudi hospitality and prayed for the friendship between the two countries to “flourish and attain new heights of glory.”
