Iranians React to Trump’s Threat Over Strait of Hormuz

US President Donald Trump issued a new threat against Iran. He demanded the opening of the Strait of Hormuz. Otherwise, he would destroy Iran’s power plants and bridges.

A Harsh Deadline from Washington

Trump posted the warning on social media on Sunday. He used expletives in his message. He also set a specific deadline: Tuesday at 20:00 ET. That equals 01:00 BST on Wednesday.

Iranian Officials Fire Back

Iranian officials mocked the president’s tone. A presidential aide called his words “insults and nonsense”. The aide said they came from “sheer desperation and anger”.However, ordinary Iranians also reacted. The BBC managed to speak with several citizens. All of them oppose the current Iranian establishment. Contacting people inside Iran is very difficult. The authorities imposed an internet blackout over five weeks ago.

Mixed Feelings on the Ground

Some Iranians fear more destruction. Others feel angry at both sides. Interestingly, even regime opponents criticised Trump’s language. They do not support their own government. But they also reject foreign threats. The BBC changed their names for safety reasons. The internet blackout remains in place. As a result, information from inside Iran is still limited.
