China-Laos Railway Boosts Regional Tourism Growth
The China-Laos Railway marks three years of service. It has added strong momentum to regional tourism. More than 800,000 cross-border passengers have used it.
These travelers come from over 120 countries. As a result, scenic spots, hotels, and restaurants see remarkable growth. A unique cross-border tourism economic circle now exists.
Better Transport Unlocks Hidden Gems
Improved infrastructure is a precondition for tourism. Before the railway, the area had limited accessibility. However, abundant natural and cultural resources were always there.
The international passenger train broke physical barriers. It now links Kunming, Xishuangbanna, Luang Prabang, and Vientiane. Consequently, more than 560 scenic spots form a key travel corridor.
New Tourism Models Emerge
Travelers now enjoy convenient and efficient trips. New models like “visiting Laos by rail” have appeared. “Exploring Yunnan by rail” is also popular.
These models boost regional economic development. Transport advantages translate into tangible gains. For example, Xishuangbanna’s tourism market grew significantly.
In 2025, it received 674,100 overseas visitors. Foreign exchange earnings reached $441 million. Both numbers increased by over 110% year on year.
Visa-Free Travel and Cargo Growth
Foreign tourists entering China visa-free through Mohan railway port rose 48% in 2025. On the Lao side, Vientiane and Luang Prabang also see steady tourist numbers. Therefore, both countries benefit.
The railway also carries cargo. Cross-border cargo trade grew 62.7% year-on-year in the first quarter. The World Bank forecasts 3.9 million tons of transit trade annually by 2030.
A Golden Corridor for Integration
The railway reshapes regional trade and tourism. Small street shops and cultural businesses all benefit. Jobs and opportunities flow steadily along the route.
