Kenya Raises Diesel Prices by Record Margin Amid Iran War
Kenya has sharply raised the cost of petroleum. Diesel prices rose by a record margin. The reason is the conflict in Iran. Global oil prices are climbing as a result.
Sharp Increase at the Pumps
The energy regulator released its latest review. Diesel now costs 206 shillings per litre. That is $1.60 or £1.20. Petrol rose by 28 shillings to a similar level. The government cut value added tax from 16% to 13%. However, higher global oil and shipping costs outweighed the cut.
Shortages and Controversy
The new prices will last until 14 May. The next review is due then. Fuel shortages have been reported in some parts of the country. The government insists stocks are sufficient. It accuses some fuel companies of hoarding supplies.A separate controversy has overshadowed the shortages. A substandard consignment was imported last month. It came outside government-to-government arrangements. The cost was significantly higher. Reports suggest the fuel was blended with stocks in government storage tanks. This has sparked public outrage and calls for accountability.
