Punjab Expands Electric Transport with New Buses and E-Taxi Plan

Punjab electric transport plans gained momentum as Maryam Nawaz Sharif chaired a key meeting. Officials reviewed progress on public transport and discussed expanding electric mobility. As a result, the province aims to improve travel options and reduce costs.
The meeting highlighted the success of the free transport programme. More than 125,000 people have benefited across 21 routes so far. In addition, authorities completed 3,560 bus trips under this initiative.

Expansion of Electric Buses

Maryam Nawaz approved new electric buses for several districts. These include Attock, Bhakkar, Hafizabad, Khanewal, Layyah, Sheikhupura, Gujranwala, Sialkot, Mandi Bahauddin, and Okara. Therefore, more regions will soon gain access to modern transport.
Officials shared a clear delivery timeline for the buses. Around 100 electric buses will arrive this month. Another 350 will arrive by mid-May, followed by 264 by the end of June.
The government also plans to build bus depots in every division. These depots will support operations and maintenance of the electric fleet. As a result, services can run more efficiently.

E-Taxis, E-Bikes and Future Plans

The chief minister directed authorities to prepare a plan for 1,500 electric buses at the tehsil level. This step aims to expand coverage further. In addition, officials reviewed mass transit projects in Gujranwala and Faisalabad.
A report on Punjab’s first e-taxi scheme was also presented. Around 194 electric taxis will arrive in May, while 208 more will come in June. Therefore, the province is moving towards cleaner urban transport.
Maryam Nawaz also ordered faster work on metro bus stations. She approved new station designs and reviewed progress under the “Empower Her” project in Lahore.
Moreover, the meeting gave initial approval for an e-bike scheme for government employees. This initiative will offer affordable and eco-friendly commuting options.
