UK Says Falklands Sovereignty Rests with Britain After US Report
Sovereignty of the Falkland Islands “rests with the UK”. Downing Street made this clear on Friday. The statement followed a report about the US. The report suggested the US could review its position on Britain’s claim.
A Strong Statement from Downing Street
The Falklands are a British overseas territory. They lie in the south-west Atlantic Ocean. Argentina also claims the islands. The dispute has lasted for decades.
The Pentagon Report Said:
An internal Pentagon email was reported by Reuters. It suggested the US was considering options. These options would punish Nato allies. The US believed those allies failed to support its war on Iran. The options also included seeking Spain’s suspension from Nato.
BBC News has not been able to review the document. It has contacted the Pentagon for comment.
Islanders’ Right to Self-Determination is Paramount
A No 10 spokesman said the Falklands had “overwhelmingly voted in favor of remaining a UK overseas territory”. He added that the UK “has always stood behind the islanders’ right to self-determination”. He said sovereignty “rests with the UK”.The spokesman also said the government “could not be clearer about the UK’s position”. He added that “nothing is going to change that”. The UK has expressed this position clearly to successive US administrations.
