Karachi Water Shortfall: 48-Hour Supply Disruption During Upgrade
Karachi water shortfall will affect the city for 48 hours due to urgent upgrade work. The supply may drop by 250 million gallons per day. As a result, many areas will face disruptions and shortages.
Supply Disruption and Affected Areas
The Karachi Water and Sewerage Corporation will begin work at the Dhabeji Pumping Station. The team will connect a new transmission line to the existing system. This process will start on Saturday evening and continue for two days.
The shutdown will run from 12 noon on April 25 to April 27. During this time, supply from the Fourth Phase, K-II, and K-III systems will stop. Therefore, several areas will face complete disruption.
North Karachi, Surjani Town, Scheme 33, and Gulistan-i-Jauhar will see major outages. Meanwhile, parts of Gulshan-i-Iqbal, Saddar, and Chanesar Town will face temporary shortages. Residents should plan water usage carefully during this period.
Upgrade Work and Expected Relief
Officials say the project will improve the city’s ageing water system. In addition, the upgrade will boost transmission efficiency and stabilize pressure. This step will support better water distribution after completion.
To carry out the work, authorities will shut down nine of the 21 pumps at Dhabeji. However, seven pumps will resume operations by April 27. Two pumps will remain offline for five more days to complete technical work.
Hydrants at Nipa, Safoora, and Sakhi Hasan will also stay closed. Karachi usually receives about 650 MGD of water. However, supply may drop to around 400 MGD during the shutdown.
As a result, residents should store water and avoid waste. Careful planning can help reduce inconvenience until normal supply resumes.
