Pakistan, Saudi Arabia Ink Defence Pact to Boost Security Cooperation Agreement Formalises Decades of Ties, Excludes Nuclear Weapons

Pakistan and Saudi Arabia have signed a landmark defence pact, described by Finance Minister and Defence Minister Ishaq Dar as a “historic milestone” in bilateral relations. Speaking to journalists in London, Dar explained that the agreement formalises decades of close security cooperation, particularly Pakistan’s longstanding commitment to safeguarding the Kingdom and the two Holy Mosques. He noted that while an implicit understanding had always existed, the signing of this pact gives the relationship formal recognition and structure. Dar added that other nations have expressed interest in similar arrangements, but stressed such agreements require time and follow due process. He highlighted that even with Saudi Arabia, the negotiations and finalisation took several months. Both Islamabad and Riyadh expressed deep satisfaction with the development, with Dar acknowledging Saudi Arabia’s steadfast support for Pakistan during past international and economic crises, including critical assistance extended during the country’s recent financial challenges.
Defence Minister Khawaja Muhammad Asif clarified to Reuters that nuclear weapons are “not on the radar” of the agreement, emphasising that the pact is defensive in nature and could eventually extend to include other Gulf nations. He stressed that Pakistan has no intention of using the pact for aggression, but if either party faces a threat, the arrangement will come into effect. A senior Saudi official echoed this, describing it as a “comprehensive defensive agreement encompassing all military means.” A statement from Riyadh confirmed that the pact aims to expand aspects of defence cooperation and enhance joint deterrence. The official announcement made no reference to nuclear weapons or financial compensation for Pakistan. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif thanked Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman for his commitment to strengthening investments, trade, and economic ties with Pakistan. The agreement signals not only stronger security cooperation but also deepening strategic partnership between the two countries.
