OpenAI Misses Targets as Google and Anthropic Gain Ground

OpenAI has missed both revenue and user targets in early 2026. The company faces rising competition from Google’s Gemini and Anthropic’s Claude. As a result, its growth momentum is slowing.

Why OpenAI Fell Behind

OpenAI aimed for one billion weekly active users by the end of 2025. However, ChatGPT failed to reach that milestone. In addition, subscriber churn for ChatGPT Plus has increased. Financially, the company is under pressure. Spending commitments for massive data centers total $600 billion. Therefore, OpenAI expects to burn $25 billion in 2026 against a $30 billion revenue target. Competitors are gaining ground quickly. For example, Google’s Gemini integrates with search and enterprise tools. Anthropic’s Claude is winning users in coding and business markets. As a result, OpenAI’s market share is shrinking.

Internal Tensions and Risks

Leadership disagreements add to the challenge. CEO Sam Altman wants to push for an IPO. However, CFO Sarah Friar believes OpenAI is not ready for public reporting. Board members are questioning Altman’s aggressive expansion strategy. In addition, lawsuits and executive absences have created instability. These issues raise concerns about OpenAI’s long‑term direction. Overall, the company must balance growth with sustainability. Heavy spending without clear monetization could weaken its position. Therefore, OpenAI needs a sharper strategy to compete effectively.
