Trojan Horse Obesity Drug Boosts Weight Loss in Early Mouse Tests

A new Trojan horse drug could change obesity treatment in the future. Researchers at Helmholtz Munich created a smart therapy that targets cells directly. The treatment helped mice lose more weight and control blood sugar better. In addition, the drug worked at much lower doses. Scientists believe this method may also reduce harmful side effects.

How the Trojan Horse Drug Works

The new Trojan horse drug combines two treatments into one smart molecule. First, it uses GLP-1 and GIP signals to enter specific cells. Then, it releases a second metabolic booster inside those cells.Researchers compared the process to a Trojan horse. The outer layer opens the cell door, while the inner drug improves fat and sugar metabolism. As a result, the treatment targets only the needed cells instead of affecting the whole body. The research team, led by Timo D. Müller, tested the therapy in mice with obesity. The animals ate less food and lost more weight. Furthermore, their blood sugar levels improved quickly.

Early Results Show Promise

Scientists reported stronger results than some current GLP-1 treatments. The mice also showed better insulin function and healthier glucose control. Therefore, the therapy may help people with both obesity and type 2 diabetes in the future.Importantly, the study showed fewer signs of serious side effects. Researchers did not find fluid retention or anemia during testing. However, the team says human studies are still necessary before approval. The findings appeared in the journal Nature. Experts believe the targeted design could improve future obesity drugs. In addition, researchers see possible benefits for liver and heart health.Although the results look promising, the treatment remains in the early testing stage. Scientists now plan to adapt the Trojan horse drug for human clinical trials.
