Iran Sends Response to US War-Ending Proposals via Pakistan
Iran says it has sent its response to US proposals to end the war. Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif confirmed this. His country has served as a mediator. He said Pakistan received the Iranian response but could not share any details. He also did not say if the proposal has been passed on to the US. The US has not made its proposals public. However, reports suggest they centre on a 14-point memorandum of understanding. This could lead to negotiations on Iran’s nuclear ambitions.
The US Is Proposing
US news outlet Axios reported on the one-page memo. It includes provisions such as a suspension of Iranian nuclear enrichment. It also includes lifting sanctions and restoring free transit through the Strait of Hormuz. Many terms would be contingent on a final agreement being reached.
Ceasefire and Maritime Security
A ceasefire has been largely observed. It was meant to facilitate talks to end the war. The war was launched by the US and Israel in February. Despite occasional exchanges of fire, the truce holds. Iran’s Isna news agency said the Iranian response focuses on “ending the war and maritime security” in the Gulf and the Strait of Hormuz. Iran continues to block the waterway, which has led to a rise in world oil prices.
