Proposed Rule Changes Daily Vehicle Limit at Denali
The U.S. Department of the Interior has announced an important proposed rule for Denali National Park. This update amends the current federal regulations for motor vehicles on the park’s main road. Specifically, it changes the way authorities manage vehicle numbers on the restricted section.
Moving to a Daily Vehicle Limit
The new proposal allows up to 160 motor vehicles to travel the restricted section every day. Previously, the federal rules enforced an outdated seasonal cap of 10,512 total trips. Therefore, this fresh shift ensures that access decisions rely on modern traffic simulation models. In addition, it improves transparency and removes unnecessary bureaucracy for park visitors.
Protecting Wilderness and Wildlife
The restricted zone begins right after the Savage River checkpoint due to environmental sensitivities. However, a slow landslide has blocked the road at Mile 43 since 2021. Ongoing bridge construction continues to fix this issue sustainably through the summer season. As a result, the daily limit will help manage vehicle traffic while protecting fragile habitats and local wildlife.
