Sindh Approves 500 Electric Buses to Expand Public Transport Network
Sindh electric buses will soon become part of the province’s expanding public transport network after the government approved the procurement of 500 electric buses. Senior minister Sharjeel Inam Memon announced the decision during a Sindh Assembly session on Monday. The project will move forward under a public-private partnership initiative. Therefore, the government aims to improve transport services in underserved areas and provide better travel facilities for citizens. Officials believe the new buses will help reduce transport problems in several parts of Sindh, especially in densely populated urban areas.
Government Expands Public Transport Services
During the assembly session, Naseer Ahmed highlighted the shortage of public transport in Karachi’s Manghopir area. He urged the government to launch transport services for local residents who face daily commuting difficulties. In response, Sharjeel Memon said the provincial government was actively expanding the transport network across Sindh.
He announced that new bus services would soon start operating in Orangi, Banaras, and several other areas of Karachi. In addition, he informed lawmakers that the government had already introduced new transport routes in Tando Allah Yar, Khairpur, and Rohri. A new bus route in Karachi’s Gulshan-e-Maymar area has also become operational.
Lawmakers Raise Concerns Over Drugs and Gutka
Separately, Maaz Mehboob raised concerns about the open sale of gutka and narcotics in several Karachi neighborhoods. He alleged that drugs were being sold openly in many areas, including his constituency. Furthermore, he claimed that such activities were taking place under police patronage.
The lawmaker urged Sindh Home Minister Zia Lanjar to visit the affected areas and take immediate action. As a result, the issue sparked further discussion in the assembly regarding law enforcement and public safety in Karachi.
