Thailand to End 60-Day Visa-Free Stay for UK and Other Tourists

UK citizens will soon need a visa for stays longer than 30 days in Thailand.

A Major Change for Tourists

Dozens of other nationalities will face the same requirement. The new rule ends a 60-day visa-free exemption introduced in July 2024.The exemption was part of a government effort to boost the economy after Covid. Tourists from 93 countries have enjoyed visa-free travel for 60 days. However, the government approved plans on Tuesday to revoke this policy.
Security and Confusion Cited. Thailand cited security and a confusing visa scheme as reasons for the change. There have been several high-profile arrests of foreigners in the country. Some cases were linked to drugs and sex trafficking. Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul said the policy needed revising “to be more suitable for the current situation, both in terms of the economy and national security”.

Country-by-Country Rules

Nationals who enjoyed the 60-day exemption include those from Australia, China, France, Germany, India, Italy, Spain, and the US. Most will now need a visa for stays longer than 30 days. However, some countries may have different exemption periods based on reciprocal agreements. The new visa system will take effect 15 days after it appears in the Royal Gazette.
