Ronaldo Sixth World Cup: Portugal Star Named in 2026 Squad
Cristiano Ronaldo will lead Portugal at the 2026 FIFA World Cup this summer. The Ronaldo Sixth World Cup appearance will set a new record in international football. Portugal coach Roberto Martinez included the 41-year-old forward in his latest squad announcement. Ronaldo currently plays for Saudi club Al Nassr and remains Portugal’s captain. The veteran striker has scored 143 international goals during his legendary career. However, Portugal has never won the World Cup title. Ronaldo could also face long-time rival Lionel Messi during the tournament. Messi is expected to represent Argentina in his sixth World Cup as well.
Martinez selected a strong 27-man squad for the competition. Paris Saint-Germain players Vitinha, Joao Neves, Nuno Mendes, and Goncalo Ramos all made the list. In addition, Manchester United midfielder Bruno Fernandes and Manchester City star Bernardo Silva earned selection. The coach said Ronaldo’s age would not change his role in the squad. According to Martinez, experience and focus matter more during a major tournament.
Portugal Aim for World Cup Success
Portugal enter the tournament with high hopes and a balanced squad. The team combines experienced leaders with young talent across every position. Martinez also backed Ronaldo after a difficult club season. Last weekend, the forward suffered defeat in the AFC Champions League Two final with Al Nassr. However, the coach believes international duty brings fresh motivation. The Portugal manager also paid tribute to late striker Diogo Jota. Jota died in a car crash in July 2025. Martinez said the squad would carry his spirit throughout the tournament.
Before the World Cup begins, Portugal will face Chile and Nigeria in friendly matches. Their campaign starts against DR Congo on June 17. Later, Portugal will meet Uzbekistan and Colombia in Group K. Fans now wait eagerly to see whether Ronaldo can finally lift football’s biggest prize.
