Baku-Tbilisi Passenger Rail Reconnects the South Caucasus

Azerbaijan and Georgia have officially agreed to resume their regular cross-border passenger rail service after a six-year hiatus. This major milestone was announced during an official state visit to Baku by Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze and Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev. The daily service is scheduled to launch on May 26, 2026.

Boosting Connectivity and Tourism

The revival of the daily route between Tbilisi and Baku is expected to significantly boost regional tourism. For example, international and local travelers can now enjoy an affordable and comfortable alternative to air travel. In addition, the seamless link simplifies cross-border transit between the two neighboring capitals. Therefore, both countries anticipate a sharp rise in shared holiday bookings and cultural exchanges.

Economic Integration and Modernization

The passenger line works in tandem with the newly upgraded Baku-Tbilisi-Kars (BTK) railway section. Top officials signed a historic protocol to fully operationalize this transit corridor, strengthening economic ties across the region. As a result, the South Caucasus is solidifying its role as a key hub for transcontinental travel and trade. Furthermore, this inclusive infrastructure makes exploring the diverse landscapes of Eurasia easier than ever.
