2026 FIFA World Cup Carbon Impact Could Break Global Sports Records

2026 FIFA World Cup Carbon Impact Could Break Global Sports Records

The 2026 FIFA tournament is expected to make history for more than football. Experts warn that World Cup emissions could become the highest ever linked to a sporting event. Researchers from the University of Lausanne say the expanded tournament will create major environmental challenges. The competition will feature 48 teams for the first time. In addition, matches will take place across the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
Environmental expert David Gogishvili said recent Olympic Games reduced their carbon footprints. However, the FIFA World Cup is moving in the opposite direction. According to university research, the event could produce between five and nine million tonnes of CO2 emissions. That number is much higher than previous tournaments. For example, the 2018 World Cup in Russia generated about 2.17 million tonnes of CO2. Meanwhile, the 2022 Qatar event produced around 3.17 million tonnes.

Long Travel Distances Raise Concerns

Organizers plan to use 16 existing stadiums across North America. Supporters of the bid praised that decision because it avoided large-scale stadium construction. However, travel remains the biggest concern. The distance between host cities is enormous. For instance, Miami and Vancouver sit more than 4,500 kilometres apart. Experts say air travel creates the largest share of emissions during international sporting events. Teams, officials, journalists, and millions of supporters will travel constantly during the tournament. Bosnia and Herzegovina’s group-stage journey highlights the issue. The team will travel over 5,000 kilometres between Toronto, Los Angeles, and Seattle. Despite environmental concerns, FIFA expects record-breaking revenue and global attention. As a result, many people now question how future sporting events can balance growth with sustainability.
