Quetta Train Blast Leaves Dozens Dead and Injured
A powerful blast struck a shuttle train near Chaman Phatak in Quetta on Sunday, killing at least 24 people and injuring around 70 others. Officials said the explosion happened at about 8:15am when the train travelled from Quetta Cantonment to connect with the Jaffar Express. The blast derailed the engine and three bogies, while two coaches overturned. Authorities said the train carried civilians along with Frontier
Corps personnel and their families.
The banned Baloch Liberation Army claimed responsibility for the attack and described it as a suicide bombing. Government officials confirmed that the explosion targeted innocent civilians, including women and children. According to reports, several nearby vehicles caught fire and residential buildings suffered heavy damage due to the blast.
Emergency Declared in Quetta Hospitals
The Inter-Services Public Relations confirmed that three Frontier Corps personnel were among the victims. Officials also said many injured people remained in critical condition. Tragically, an entire family of four lost their lives in the attack, leaving the province in mourning.
Soon after the explosion, rescue teams, firefighters, and security personnel rushed to the site. Authorities shifted the injured to Civil Hospital, BMC, and other trauma centres in Quetta. In addition, the provincial government declared an emergency in major hospitals and called medical staff on urgent duty.
Officials also established a central control room at the deputy commissioner’s office to coordinate rescue and relief operations. Meanwhile, security forces sealed the area and launched a search operation.
Leaders Condemn Deadly Attack
Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi arrived in Quetta and chaired a high-level security meeting with Mir Sarfraz Bugti. The meeting reviewed the initial investigation and discussed security measures.
President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif strongly condemned the attack. Both leaders vowed to continue action against terrorists and their facilitators. Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar also praised rescue workers and health officials for their rapid response.
