Super El Niño Begins and Threatens Weather Extremes
El Niño has officially begun. US scientists confirmed the news. This natural Pacific weather pattern pushes up global temperatures. Therefore, it threatens weather extremes worldwide. The US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) made the declaration. Sea surface temperatures have risen sharply in recent months. As a result, conditions are now under way in the tropical Pacific.
Could Become a “Super” El Niño
Many forecasts suggest this could become a so-called “super” El Niño. In fact, it may be among the strongest ever recorded. Coming on top of decades of human-caused warming, it could bring another record-hot year. That would most likely be 2027.Disruptions to weather, food supplies, and economies could run well into that year. This announcement is not a surprise. Forecasters have expected this warming phase after the cooler “sister” pattern, La Niña, ended earlier this year.
The Threshold Has Been Crossed
Sea surface temperatures in the central and tropical Pacific have now passed the 0.5°C-above-average threshold. That is the marker US scientists use to define an El Niño event. Therefore, the world must prepare for extreme weather ahead.
