Salaried Tax Relief 2026: Govt Plans Higher Tax Slab, Ends 10% Surcharge
The federal government is preparing a tax relief package for employees in the upcoming budget. Under the proposed Salaried Tax Relief 2026 plan, officials may raise the highest income tax slab threshold from Rs.4.1 million to Rs.7 million per year. They also plan to abolish the 10 percent surcharge on top earners.
The proposal aims to reduce the tax burden on salaried individuals. Many employees received salary increases due to inflation. However, those adjustments pushed them into higher tax brackets without improving their real purchasing power.
Relief for Salaried Individuals
Budget sources say the government wants to support upper-middle-income professionals. Over the past few years, inflation increased living costs across the country. As a result, many workers paid more taxes despite facing financial pressure.
The proposed changes could help employees keep more of their earnings. In addition, removing the 10 percent surcharge would lower the overall tax burden on high-income taxpayers. Therefore, many professionals could benefit if the government approves the measures.
However, officials are unlikely to change tax slabs for people earning between Rs.600,000 and Rs.1.2 million annually. Consequently, lower- and lower-middle-income earners may not receive immediate relief in the next budget.
Focus on a Fairer Tax System
The salaried class remains one of the largest contributors to direct taxes in Pakistan. Many economists argue that documented workers carry a disproportionate share of the tax burden. Meanwhile, sectors such as agriculture, retail, and real estate remain relatively undertaxed. Successive governments often increased taxes on salaried individuals instead of expanding the tax net.
The latest proposal suggests a partial shift in policy. Moreover, it reflects growing concerns about fairness in the tax system. While the relief mainly targets higher earners, it could signal broader reforms in the future. As a result, taxpayers will closely watch the federal budget announcement.
