The Sindh government has rolled out the Pink EV Scooty Scheme, a groundbreaking initiative designed to empower women by providing them with free electric scooters. The scheme, spearheaded by the Transport and Mass Transit Department and executed by the Sindh Mass Transit Authority, specifically targets female students and working professionals who rely heavily on public transport for daily commuting. Senior Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon stated that the program represents a “revolutionary step” to ensure safe, affordable, and dignified travel for women across the province. He added that the transparent and merit-based allotment mechanism will guarantee maximum participation. This effort builds on the success of the Pink Bus Service, launched in 2023, which exclusively catered to female passengers. By improving mobility and independence, the scheme not only reduces travel time and costs but also contributes to women’s social and economic inclusion, enabling them to fully engage in education and employment opportunities.
Eligibility for the Pink EV Scooty Scheme requires applicants to be permanent residents of Sindh, hold a valid driving license, and be either enrolled in an educational institution or employed in the province. Beneficiaries must also agree not to sell or sublet the scooters for at least seven years, ensuring the scheme’s long-term impact. In February, the government announced that distribution would take place through a transparent lottery system, ensuring equal opportunities for all eligible women. Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon urged students and working women to apply and take advantage of the facility, highlighting its role in encouraging female participation in public, professional, and educational life. The initiative aligns with the provincial government’s vision of empowering women across all spheres, fostering gender equality, and promoting eco-friendly transport solutions. By introducing electric scooters, the scheme not only uplifts women but also supports sustainable urban mobility in Sindh.
