Karachi AI Traffic System to Expand to Airport Road and Clifton by August 2026

Karachi Traffic Police plans to expand its Karachi AI Traffic enforcement system to several major roads by August 2026. The new locations include Airport Road, Clifton, and the busy Do Talwar and Teen Talwar junctions. Officials believe the technology will improve traffic discipline and reduce violations across the city.
The department is currently testing the system on Shahrah-e-Faisal. DIG Traffic Pir Muhammad Shah said authorities have installed 20 high-resolution Automatic Number Plate Recognition cameras from Shahrah-e-Faisal up to Drigh Road. These cameras operate around the clock and automatically detect lane violations.

AI System Shows Promising Results

Traffic police selected Shahrah-e-Faisal for the pilot project because it carries a high volume of daily traffic. According to the DIG, the system currently issues around 100 challans every day for lane violations.
He said improving discipline on Shahrah-e-Faisal would demonstrate the system’s effectiveness on other roads as well. Therefore, authorities are closely monitoring the project’s performance before expanding it to additional locations.
The AI-powered cameras identify vehicles that violate lane rules and record their registration details. As a result, traffic officers can issue fines more efficiently without relying solely on manual enforcement.

Smart Technology Targets Safer Roads

Officials have warned motorists that no first-offense waiver applies on Shahrah-e-Faisal. However, drivers can use a one-time deferment option under specific circumstances.
Pir Muhammad Shah explained that the technology can distinguish between deliberate violations and genuine emergencies. For example, the system flags cases involving vehicle breakdowns, potholes, or unavoidable situations for manual review. This process helps ensure fair enforcement.
The fines vary according to vehicle type and the level of risk involved. Motorcyclists and rickshaw drivers face a fine of Rs. 2,500, while car owners must pay Rs. 5,000. Buses receive fines of Rs. 7,500, whereas dumpers and tankers face penalties of Rs. 10,000.
Officials say the system has already improved traffic flow on Shahrah-e-Faisal. In addition, more buses are now staying within their designated lanes. Authorities expect the expansion of the Karachi AI Traffic system to further strengthen road safety and traffic management across the city.
