Captain Karnal Sher Khan Remembered on 27th Martyrdom Anniversary
Captain Karnal Sher Khan was remembered across Pakistan on Sunday as the nation observed the 27th anniversary of his martyrdom. The leadership of the Pakistan Armed Forces paid tribute to his courage, devotion, and sacrifice during the 1999 Kargil conflict. Therefore, military leaders and citizens honored his service and reaffirmed their commitment to the values he represented.
Armed forces honor national hero
According to the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), Chief of Defense Forces and Chief of Army Staff Field Marshal Asim Munir, Chief of Naval Staff Admiral Naveed Ashraf, Air Chief Marshal Zaheer Ahmed Baber Sidhu, and the armed forces paid tribute to the Nishan-e-Haider recipient. The military described him as a symbol of bravery, patriotism, and unwavering commitment to the nation.
ISPR said Captain Karnal Sher Khan displayed exceptional leadership while defending the country against overwhelming odds during the Kargil conflict. He embraced martyrdom on July 5, 1999, while leading his troops in the snow-covered mountains of Kargil. Moreover, the military said his courage continues to inspire generations of Pakistanis.
The armed forces also reaffirmed their resolve to uphold the ideals for which he sacrificed his life. Officials said his legacy remains a lasting symbol of honour, courage, and service to the country.
Swabi ceremony pays tribute
People from different walks of life gathered at Captain Karnal Sher Khan’s mausoleum in Swabi to offer prayers and pay their respects. The Pakistan Army held a commemorative ceremony at the site. Inspector General Frontier Corps Khyber Pakhtunkhwa North Major General Rao Imran Sarta attended the event as the chief guest. In addition, an army contingent presented a salute while the chief guest laid a floral wreath at the martyr’s grave.
Born on January 1, 1970, Captain Karnal Sher Khan first joined the Pakistan Air Force before receiving a commission in the Pakistan Army. He fought at an altitude of nearly 17,000 feet in the Guitar Sector along the Line of Control until his last breath.
His nephew, Numan Sher, recalled that the family remained proud of his sacrifice. He also shared that before leaving for Kargil, Captain Karnal Sher Khan had told his fellow soldiers he would return wrapped in the Pakistani flag—a promise he fulfilled through his supreme sacrifice.
