Mazar-e-Quaid Reopening Proposed as Senate Panel Reviews Security
Pakistan may soon witness the Mazar-e-Quaid reopening after a Senate subcommittee recommended restoring public access to the country’s most prominent national monument. The panel also called for stronger security measures and improved management to ensure a safe and welcoming environment for visitors. In addition, members stressed that the mausoleum represents Pakistan’s identity and deserves better facilities. They expressed hope that the site would reopen once authorities address all security concerns.
Senate Panel Recommends Better Security and Public Access
The recommendations emerged during a meeting of the Senate Standing Committee on National Heritage’s subcommittee, chaired by Senator Waqar Mehdi. Senator Bushra Anjum also attended the session and later addressed the media. The committee announced that it would hold another meeting with the Mazar-e-Quaid Management Board within the next 15 days. During that meeting, members will review progress on the proposed improvements and security arrangements.
Speaking to reporters, Senator Waqar Mehdi described Mazar-e-Quaid as the face of Pakistan. He said authorities should continue improving its administration and visitor facilities. Furthermore, he urged all relevant institutions to work together to enhance the management of the historic landmark. He added that the mausoleum has remained closed to the general public for the past three to four years because of security concerns. Therefore, the committee wants practical solutions that allow visitors to return safely.
Committee Plans Improvements Before Reopening
Senator Waqar Mehdi announced the formation of a special committee to review existing security arrangements. The committee will recommend measures that balance public access with effective safety protocols. As a result, authorities hope to create a secure environment without restricting visitors unnecessarily.
Senator Bushra Anjum said officials are already working to beautify Mazar-e-Quaid and improve its overall appearance. She also urged the media to highlight the importance of preserving Pakistan’s national heritage. Moreover, she supported reopening the mausoleum as soon as possible after security requirements are met. If the recommendations move forward, the Mazar-e-Quaid reopening could allow citizens and tourists to once again visit one of Pakistan’s most respected national landmarks.
