European Tourism Grows in 2026 Led by Greece, Italy and Malta
International visitor numbers to Europe have increased by 5% so far in 2026. This growth comes despite rising geopolitical and economic uncertainty. The European Travel Commission reported these positive figures. Overnight stays across the continent rose by 4.8%. The stable performance demonstrates the sector’s resilience.
Top Performing Destinations
Greece recorded the largest increase in arrivals at 38.3%. Italy followed closely with a 21.1% rise. Malta achieved a strong 16% growth in visitor numbers. Southern and Mediterranean Europe remained solid overall. Portugal and Spain also recorded broad-based increases.
Northern Europe outperformed other subregions with 10% growth. Central and Eastern Europe saw arrivals rise by 5.2%. These regions offer new experiences and better value for money. Travellers increasingly seek destinations perceived as safer.
Challenges and Spending Patterns
Cyprus faced a 17.9% decline in arrivals. Türkiye saw visitor numbers fall by 2.1%. Both destinations felt the impact of Middle East conflicts. The Easter timing effect also affected Cyprus’s performance.
Greece stood out for travel spending growth of 64.3%. This significantly outpaced its arrival growth of 38.3%. Italy’s spending increased by only 4.3% despite higher arrivals. Travel choices are becoming more selective and price-sensitive.
