Maine Senate Race: Platner Withdraws From Campaign
Platner Suspends Senate Campaign
Democratic candidate Platner announced on Thursday that he is suspending his campaign for the Maine Senate race. In an 11-minute video posted on X, he said campaign operations would end immediately following mounting pressure from members of his party.
Platner maintained that his decision was not an admission of guilt. He described the assault allegation against him as false. However, after Democrats threatened to withdraw campaign support, he decided to step aside.
Allegations and Political Pressure
Democrats consider the Maine Senate race crucial to their efforts to gain control of the US Senate. Party leaders urged Platner to withdraw after the allegation surfaced, fearing it could damage their chances against Republican Susan Collins.
Platner said he would formally file his withdrawal after receiving assurances that the replacement process would be transparent, democratic, and fair. He added that he did not intend to influence the selection of his successor.
What Happens Next?
“We’re suspending campaign operations,” Platner said in his video.
He stated that the replacement process should remain open, democratic, and reflective of the movement’s values.
The Democratic Party must now choose a new candidate to challenge Susan Collins in the general election. Platner’s withdrawal has significantly reshaped the race and increased pressure on party leaders to unite behind a strong replacement.
