Ro Khanna Settler Detainment: Congressman Held

Ro Khanna Settler Detainment: A West Bank Incident

The Ro Khanna settler detainment has sparked international attention. US congressman Ro Khanna was held for 90 minutes. Armed Israeli settlers surrounded his van on Wednesday. The 49-year-old politician was visiting the occupied West Bank.
Khanna travelled with his team in a van. They toured Khirbet Zanuta, a destroyed village. Settlers wielding American-made M4 rifles blocked their path. The group found themselves trapped immediately.

The IDF’s Role

Khanna posted about the incident on X. He stated that the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) arrived at the scene. However, he claimed they “sided with the settlers and continued our detention”. This accusation has deepened the controversy.
The IDF offered a different version of events. They said troops and police responded to a report about blocked vehicles. The military stated they dispersed the civilians and allowed the vehicles to continue. The BBC has sought further comment from the IDF.

A Fact-Finding Visit

Khanna is considering a presidential run in 2028. He described the visit as a fact-finding mission. He wanted to see the impact of the Israeli occupation. The congressman called the settlers “hoodlums with machine guns”.
An aide appealed to the US Embassy in Jerusalem for help. Police officers eventually intervened and secured their release. The incident highlights the volatile situation in the region.
About 700,000 Jewish settlers live in the West Bank. The settlements are illegal under international law. Approximately 3.3 million Palestinians reside alongside them. This detainment has brought renewed focus to these tensions.
