China Sets Nuclear Milestone With Continuous Thorium Reactor Refueling

China has taken a decisive step in advanced nuclear energy by successfully refueling a molten salt thorium reactor without shutting it down — a technical feat no other nation has accomplished. The experimental reactor, located in the Gobi Desert, generates two megawatts of electricity, enough to supply around 2,000 homes, and showcases China’s growing expertise in next-generation clean power.
Molten salt thorium reactors differ significantly from traditional uranium designs. They use thorium, a naturally abundant and safer fuel, and operate at extremely high temperatures. If a malfunction occurs, the liquid fuel mixture cools and solidifies, safely halting the reaction and reducing meltdown risk. Another advantage is their ability to reuse waste from older reactors, cutting down on long-term radioactive byproducts.
The project builds on declassified U.S. research from the 1960s, which was abandoned due to corrosion and engineering challenges. Chinese engineers spent decades refining the concept, overcoming obstacles that previously limited molten salt technology. Xu Hongjie, lead scientist on the project, attributed this success to sustained investment and a clear long-term vision for clean energy innovation.
China’s breakthrough aligns with its carbon neutrality target for 2060. With extensive domestic thorium reserves, the country could meet its energy needs for thousands of years while minimizing nuclear waste and safety concerns. Industry observers note that this development positions China at the forefront of the global race to create safer, more sustainable nuclear power options.
