Coffee Liver Benefits: Study Links Daily Coffee to Better Liver Health

Coffee liver benefits continue to attract attention after a new long-term study found a link between regular coffee drinking and better liver health. Researchers from Cedars-Sinai followed more than 354,000 adults for over 13 years. They discovered that people who drank coffee had lower risks of cirrhosis, liver cancer, and liver-related death. However, the research only found an association and did not prove that coffee directly prevents liver disease.

Long-Term Study Shows Positive Results

The team analyzed health records, liver MRI scans, and blood protein data. This approach helped them explore why coffee may support liver health. Participants who drank five or more cups daily showed the lowest risks. They had a 32% lower risk of cirrhosis, a 47% lower risk of liver cancer, and a 42% lower risk of liver-related death. In addition, MRI scans showed less liver fat, inflammation, fibrosis, and iron buildup among regular coffee drinkers. Blood tests also revealed healthier protein patterns linked with improved liver function and reduced scarring.

Moderate Coffee Intake Remains the Best Advice

Researchers stressed that people should not start drinking large amounts of coffee because of this study. Benefits also appeared among those who drank one to two cups daily. The strongest results were seen with about three to four cups each day. Furthermore, caffeinated and decaffeinated coffee produced similar findings. This suggests that natural compounds in coffee, not only caffeine, may help protect the liver. Even so, healthy habits remain essential. Maintaining a healthy weight, limiting alcohol, exercising regularly, and controlling blood sugar and cholesterol still offer the best protection.

Scientists Plan Further Research

The researchers now want to identify the exact coffee compounds linked with these effects. They believe future studies may reveal new ways to prevent liver disease. Meanwhile, people with heart conditions, anxiety, insomnia, or uncontrolled high blood pressure should consult a healthcare provider before increasing their coffee intake.
