Smelling Chocolate Before Workout May Boost Exercise Performance

Smelling Chocolate Workout may sound unusual, but a new study suggests it could improve exercise performance in some situations. Researchers found that smelling dark chocolate before strength training helped participants complete more leg extensions. However, experts say the findings are still early. Therefore, people should not replace proper nutrition with this simple trick.

What Researchers Discovered

Researchers studied 23 healthy young men who regularly performed strength training. During three separate sessions, participants smelled dark chocolate, milk chocolate, or a water-based control before completing leg extensions. They also rated their hunger, fullness, and desire to eat.
Results showed that dark chocolate produced the strongest effect. Participants completed around 18 extra leg extensions after smelling dark chocolate. In addition, they felt less hungry and reported greater fullness. Milk chocolate also improved performance, but its effects were smaller and less consistent. Researchers believe chocolate’s aroma may increase motivation while reducing feelings of hunger during exercise.

Why Experts Urge Caution

Although the findings are interesting, experts advise against changing workout habits based on this study alone. The research involved only healthy young men and tested a single exercise. Therefore, the results may not apply to women, older adults, beginners, or different workouts.
Experts also noted that participants could often recognize the control condition. As a result, expectations may have influenced their performance. Furthermore, the study relied on personal feedback instead of direct biological measurements.

Should You Try It?

Experts recommend eating a balanced snack before exercise instead of depending on food aromas. Proper nutrition provides the energy needed for safe and effective workouts. Skipping meals may reduce performance and increase health risks over time.
Researchers plan to explore whether other scents, including peppermint, coffee, and citrus, offer similar benefits. Until stronger evidence becomes available, smelling chocolate should be viewed as an interesting idea rather than a proven fitness strategy.
