The International Monetary Fund (IMF) delegation is set to arrive in Pakistan tomorrow for the second economic review under its ongoing loan program, ARY News reported on Wednesday, citing official sources.
The IMF mission will remain in Pakistan from September 25 to October 8. The discussions will be conducted in two phases, beginning with technical-level talks, followed by policy-level negotiations.
Meetings are scheduled with key government institutions, including the Ministry of Finance, Ministry of Energy, Ministry of Planning, and the State Bank of Pakistan. The IMF team is also expected to engage with the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR), OGRA, NEPRA, and other relevant ministries and regulators. In addition, consultations will be held with the provincial governments of Punjab, Sindh, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and Balochistan.
Sources confirmed that Pakistan has already fulfilled most of the performance criteria required to unlock the third tranche of funding under the IMF program. The country’s budget deficit, current account balance, and non-tax revenue collections remain broadly aligned with the IMF’s benchmarks. Inflation has also stayed below the target rate of 5.1 percent.
However, recent floods have created challenges for revenue collection and the agriculture sector. Tax receipts have fallen slightly short of projections, while key crops such as rice, maize, and cotton have sustained serious damage. Officials warn these setbacks could weigh on economic growth in the coming months.
It was further revealed that responsibility for formulating tax policy has now been shifted from the FBR to the Ministry of Finance, marking an institutional change in fiscal management.
