Pakistan to Build First EASA-Standard Aircraft MRO Facility
The Pakistan aircraft MRO project will establish the country’s first aircraft Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul (MRO) facility built to European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) standards. The modern center will operate at Islamabad International Airport under the Ministry of Defense’s Aviation Sector Transformation Program. Officials say the project will strengthen Pakistan’s aviation sector and reduce dependence on foreign maintenance facilities. In addition, it will improve technical expertise and create new opportunities for investment in the country’s growing aviation industry.
Modern Aviation Facilities to Boost Self-Reliance
Private aviation services company Nortec will develop the advanced MRO facility. The company will also construct a modern aircraft maintenance hangar and a full-flight simulator for pilot training at Islamabad International Airport. Once completed, the center will provide maintenance and repair services for Airbus A318, A319 and other commercial aircraft. As a result, Pakistani airlines will no longer need to send many aircraft abroad for routine maintenance.
Meanwhile, Airblue is building another modern aircraft maintenance hangar at the same airport. The facility will protect aircraft, engineers, technical staff and maintenance equipment from harsh weather conditions. Therefore, airlines will carry out repair and maintenance work more efficiently within Pakistan. The airline is also constructing a modern Flight Training Center equipped with a Full Flight Simulator. Officials expect the simulator to become operational by April 2027.
Project Aims to Strengthen Aviation Sector
The Pakistan Airports Authority (PAA) will provide administrative support for both projects. At the same time, the Pakistan Civil Aviation Authority (PCAA) will supervise regulatory compliance and ensure the facilities meet aviation standards. Officials believe these developments will improve operational efficiency across the aviation sector.
Authorities also expect the projects to transform Islamabad International Airport into a regional aviation hub. Moreover, the new infrastructure will support pilot training, expand local maintenance capabilities and create skilled employment opportunities. As a result, Pakistan can strengthen its aviation industry, attract foreign investment and reduce maintenance costs for commercial airlines. Officials say these projects mark an important step toward building a more competitive and self-reliant aviation sector while supporting long-term economic growth.
