Teen Sleep Quality Linked to Better Grades and Social Skills, Study Finds

Teen sleep quality may have a bigger impact on school success than diet, exercise, or screen time, according to new research. The study found that healthy sleep habits help teenagers perform better in class and build stronger friendships. Researchers also said sleep plays an important role in supporting mental well-being during adolescence.

Sleep strongly influences learning

Researchers from the University of California, Davis examined data from more than 6,000 young people for academic performance and over 7,000 for social behaviour. Participants were between 10 and 13 years old. The team compared sleep quality, screen time, diet, and physical activity. However, sleep showed the strongest connection with school and social outcomes.

Children with symptoms of anxiety, depression, or similar mental health concerns often struggled more at school and with friends. Even so, researchers found that better sleep reduced much of this negative impact. They expected sleep to matter, but its influence proved stronger than other lifestyle habits.

Better sleep supports daily life

Researchers explained that poor sleep can cause daytime tiredness, weaker attention, and lower decision-making skills. As a result, students may find it harder to learn, stay focused, and complete schoolwork. In addition, sleep problems may increase irritability and social withdrawal, making friendships more difficult.

Families can build healthy routines

Senior researcher Tara Niendam said families often focus on anxiety or depression. However, everyday life also matters, including school performance and social connections. Therefore, healthy bedtime routines can provide meaningful support alongside other care.

Experts said good sleep cannot solve every mental health challenge. Still, it offers a practical step that parents and caregivers can encourage every day. This simple habit may improve emotional well-being, classroom performance, and relationships. As students enjoy school breaks, experts recommend using the extra time to develop healthy sleep routines that continue throughout the academic year.
