High-Intensity Exercise Triggers Major Body Changes
Just a few minutes of high-intensity exercise may create wider changes across the body than longer moderate workouts. A new US study found that intense cycling affected hundreds of health-related proteins.
The study, published in Cell Reports Medicine, examined 30 seconds of intense cycling followed by four minutes of recovery. This short burst changed 714 proteins in blood samples. By comparison, moderate cycling affected only seven proteins.
The findings suggest exercise intensity can strongly influence the body’s response. However, the results do not mean everyone should replace regular workouts.
Intense exercise may affect fat metabolism
Researchers found that intense exercise increased Lac-Phe levels. This molecule has links with appetite control and fat metabolism.
Higher Lac-Phe levels were associated with activity in more than 1,600 genes within fat cells. Therefore, intense exercise may influence how the body handles and stores fat.
The team also examined health information from more than 53,000 people. They found links between exercise-activated proteins and lower risks of heart disease, type 2 diabetes and obesity.
Some proteins also showed connections with markers linked to slower ageing. However, these findings show associations rather than proof that intense exercise prevents these conditions.
Short workouts may help busy people
Study leader Dr Paul Cohen said the results were notable. A brief burst of intense activity appeared to produce a substantial response across the body.
This finding could interest people who struggle to find time for longer exercise sessions. Short workouts may offer another option for fitting physical activity into busy routines.
Still, exercise intensity should match each person’s fitness level, age and health needs. People with medical conditions should seek professional advice before starting demanding workouts.
Overall, the study adds to evidence about the body’s response to intense exercise. Even a cycling burst may influence many processes.
