Pakistan ML-1 Project Declared National Priority, ADB Backs Reforms
The Pakistan ML-1 project has been declared a national priority. The government aims to speed up progress and attract more private investment. As a result, discussions with the Asian Development Bank (ADB) have intensified. Officials met in Islamabad to review development plans. They focused on rail reforms, investment growth, and economic stability. In addition, both sides agreed to improve coordination for better results.
ADB Proposes Rail Reforms Plan
The ADB suggested forming a joint working group for rail reforms. This group will guide changes in Pakistan Railways. Therefore, it will help modernize systems and improve efficiency. Both sides agreed to start this process immediately. The working group will also create a platform for long term improvements. As a result, the railway sector can become more reliable and investor-friendly.
Strong Support for Economic Growth
Federal Minister Ahad Cheema highlighted the importance of the Pakistan ML-1 project. He called it a key step for national development. Meanwhile, ADB Vice President Yingming Yang praised the government’s progress. He also welcomed Pakistan’s improved economic stability. For example, better credit ratings show growing confidence in the economy. In addition, recent reforms have helped build a strong financial base. Cheema noted that ADB has supported Pakistan for decades. He appreciated the new Country Partnership Strategy for 2026–2030. This plan focuses on sustainable growth and better governance.
Focus on Private Investment and Development
The government wants more private-sector participation. Therefore, it is working on strong public-private partnership frameworks. ADB also confirmed it will expand its private investment portfolio in Pakistan. Both sides discussed support for small businesses and exports. They also explored skills development programs. As a result, these steps can create jobs and boost economic activity. Furthermore, talks covered energy, water, and food security projects. Infrastructure improvements remain a key focus. In addition, technical assistance programs will support these efforts. Pakistan and ADB agreed to speed up project implementation. They will continue close cooperation for better outcomes.
