A new cozy farming adventure is on the horizon, as Starsand Island made its latest appearance during PlayStation’s Gamescom 2025 showcase. The upcoming PS5 title from developer Seed Lab drew immediate comparisons to Stardew Valley, with its grid-based farming mechanics, detailed NPC interactions, and home customization features.
Originally revealed in Spring 2024, Starsand Island showed off farming, cooking, and seaside village life in its first trailer. Since then, developers have confirmed additional activities including fishing, exploring wild areas, and forming relationships with over 40 NPCs. A successful Kickstarter campaign soon followed, setting the stage for the game’s upcoming release on both consoles and Steam.
The newest trailer highlighted a wide range of mechanics, from farming and cooking to more unusual gameplay features such as riding an ostrich as a mount. Other details included a playable arcade cabinet, extensive personalization options for characters and pets, and even a customizable houseboat docked at the island pier.
Seed Lab has acknowledged Stardew Valley’s influence, noting that ConcernedApe’s genre-defining hit served as direct inspiration. However, Starsand Island’s watercolor anime art style and seaside setting have also invited comparisons to Studio Ghibli films, offering a visually distinct experience within the farming sim genre.
According to the official Steam page, Starsand Island’s NPCs feature evolving “affection paths,” with storylines that change based on the player’s choices. Each resident responds uniquely to the player’s actions, shaping relationships across romantic, professional, and community dimensions.
Though an exact date has not been confirmed, Starsand Island is targeting a Q4 2025 release, promising fans of cozy farming sims a new world to explore by the year’s end.
