Filipinos Reject Israeli Tourism Amid Gaza Crisis

K00130

In Siargao, locals are rejecting Israeli tourism. They voice anger at Israel’s assault on Gaza and connect it to daily life.
Siargao has long been a global surf and holiday destination. However, rising reports of abuse by Israeli tourists now fuel resentment.
Residents say some tourists refuse to pay bills, insult workers, and behave with arrogance. These stories spread quickly in early 2025 and shaped a wave of collective frustration.
Some Israeli businesses also operate in the area. This complicates matters, since boycotts could affect locals who depend on tourism. Yet many still choose to prioritize dignity over profit.

From Anger to Action

As complaints mounted, locals began pushing back. They tore down Israeli stickers and replaced them with “Free Palestine” messages. They also discussed holding protests, though not all plans became reality.
One resident described how Israeli visitors “trauma dumped” their military experiences on locals. This forced communities to absorb stress that was not theirs to carry.
In another incident, tourists reacted aggressively to stickers supporting Palestine. Shouting matches broke out, leaving many locals shaken but firm in their stance.
By September 2025, Siargao residents organized a peaceful march across the famous Sunset Bridge. Mothers, children, and workers joined to declare solidarity with Gaza. Their message was simple: the island rejects exploitation and demands respect.

Wider Solidarity Across the Philippines

Resistance has spread beyond Siargao. On Malapascua Island, locals placed watermelons at gates as a symbol of support for Palestine. Similar gestures appeared across small communities where Israeli tourism plays a role.
These actions highlight deeper questions about tourism. Who benefits from it? Who pays the price? Many Filipinos now challenge a model that often prioritizes profit over people.
By rejecting abusive behavior, Filipinos affirm their right to dignity. Their solidarity with Palestine reflects a growing global demand for justice, respect, and accountability.
