China’s Giant Floating Wind Turbine Sets Sail

China’s Giant Floating Wind Turbine Sets Sail

China has taken a bold step toward clean energy. The country has unveiled the world’s largest floating offshore wind turbine in Beihai, Guangxi.
This incredible turbine has a 16-megawatt capacity and a rotor span of 252 meters—about the length of seven soccer fields. Its size alone marks a new milestone in renewable energy innovation.

Built for Deep Waters and Big Impact

The turbine rests on a semi-submersible platform with China’s first dynamic ballast system. This advanced design keeps it stable, even in deep and turbulent waters.
In addition, every key component—such as the mooring cables, gearboxes, and ballast systems—was made entirely in China. This shows the nation’s growing strength in renewable technology manufacturing.
Once operational, the turbine will generate 44.7 million kilowatt-hours of clean electricity each year. As a result, it will supply enough energy to power over 4,000 average U.S. homes annually.
The system will soon be towed offshore for final testing. After that, it will connect to the grid for commercial use. This marks another major step toward a sustainable future powered by wind.
