Sweden’s third-largest city is making a bold leap toward cleaner transport as public operator Nobina teams up with Solaris to roll out 180 new Urbino electric buses. Deliveries are set between 2026 and 2027, covering a mix of 12-meter, 18-meter articulated, and 24-meter bi-articulated models—tailored to both city streets and suburban routes. The plan is part of Malmö’s wider mission to electrify its entire bus network.
The fleet includes 78 articulated Urbinos with 600 kWh batteries, 36 bi-articulated Urbino 24s with 700 kWh packs for high-demand routes, 65 low-entry Urbino 15 LEs with 500 kWh batteries for inner-city travel, and one compact 12-meter Urbino with a 400 kWh pack for shorter urban trips. Together, they will replace older diesel vehicles, cutting emissions, noise, and congestion while offering greater comfort and reliability.
Tourism is also set to benefit. With attractions like the Turning Torso, Malmö Museum, and Ribersborgsstranden beach linked by fully electric shuttles, visitors can explore the city without exhaust fumes or traffic frustration. Quiet, smooth rides reinforce Malmö’s image as a sustainable destination, aligned with Sweden’s eco-tourism movement.
The project strengthens the city’s reputation as a green mobility pioneer, supporting Sweden’s national climate goals while offering a blueprint for other European cities. By providing clean, efficient access to cultural landmarks and modern districts like Västra Hamnen, Malmö is enhancing both quality of life for residents and experiences for tourists.
As charging networks and transport innovations expand, Malmö is positioning itself as a regional hub for sustainable travel, connecting nearby cities like Lund and Helsingborg while securing its place as a leader in eco-friendly tourism.
