Cameroon Awaits Election Results as President Biya Seeks 8th Term
Vote counting is under way in Cameroon after Sunday’s presidential election. The poll could extend President Paul Biya’s 43 years in power.
Cameroon Awaits Election Outcome
At 92, Biya is the world’s oldest head of state. He faces nine challengers in this closely watched election. If re-elected, his next term would end in 2032, marking his eighth consecutive victory.
The election has drawn international attention due to growing calls for political reform. Many citizens hope for change after decades of the same leadership.
No official results have been announced yet. However, one of Biya’s main rivals, Issa Tchiroma Bakary, has already claimed victory.
Rival Declares Early Victory
His declaration has stirred controversy. The government warned that announcing results before the official tally could amount to “high treason.”
In response, authorities urged citizens to remain patient and allow the Constitutional Council to complete its work. The council must publish the final results within 15 days of the vote.
Despite tensions, observers say the voting process was mostly peaceful. However, concerns remain over transparency and voter turnout.
As counting continues, Cameroonians wait anxiously to see whether the long-serving president will hold on to power or if the nation will witness a historic political shift.
