CAS Upholds Ban: Israeli Gymnasts Out of World Championships

Israeli gymnasts will not take part in the upcoming World Artistic Gymnastics Championships. The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) rejected their appeal against the International Gymnastics Federation’s (FIG) decision to exclude them. The ruling, announced on Monday, ended Israel’s hopes of competing in the global event. FIG had earlier cited
security and logistical concerns due to rising regional tensions. Israel’s gymnastics federation argued the move was discriminatory and against fair play. However, CAS sided with FIG, saying the decision focused on safety, not politics.

FIG and Israel Respond

CAS explained that it reviewed both sides carefully and found no procedural issues in FIG’s decision. Therefore, the court confirmed that the federation acted within its authority to protect all athletes.
The Israeli Gymnastics Federation expressed deep disappointment. Officials called the decision “unfair” and said it harmed the spirit of equality in sports. They added that their athletes deserved to compete on merit and represent their country proudly.
In contrast, FIG welcomed the CAS ruling. The organization emphasized that athlete safety remains its top priority. In addition, it expressed hope that Israeli gymnasts could return to future competitions under better conditions.

Reactions and Impact

As a result, Israel will miss key qualification chances for upcoming global and regional tournaments. The decision has sparked debate across the sports world. Many voices are urging clearer rules on participation during geopolitical conflicts.
With the championships approaching, fans and athletes worldwide will feel the absence of the Israeli team. For many, the issue goes beyond medals—it’s about inclusion and fairness in international sport.
