Palestinian Leader Marwan Barghouti Beaten Unconscious in Israeli Prison, Family Says

The family of Palestinian leader Marwan Barghouti claims he was beaten unconscious by Israeli prison guards. The Marwan Barghouti assault reportedly took place on 14 September during a transfer between Ganot and Megiddo prisons.

Family Says Barghouti Beaten by Israeli Guards

Barghouti, aged 66, is serving a life sentence for planning deadly attacks against Israelis. His relatives said eight guards allegedly attacked him, leaving him unconscious. They described the incident as shocking and deeply distressing.

Israel Denies Allegations

The Israel Prison Service rejected the claims, calling them “false” and “fake.” In a statement to the BBC, officials said they operate “in accordance with the law” and ensure “the safety and health of all inmates.”
However, Barghouti’s son, Arab, told the BBC the family had received testimony from five detainees who were released recently. He said those individuals had heard Barghouti’s own account of the assault. “We are horrified by what we heard,” Arab said.
Barghouti remains one of the most influential figures in Palestinian politics. He rose to prominence during the Second Intifada and is often seen as a potential future leader. Many Palestinians regard him as a symbol of resistance, while Israel views him as responsible for violence against civilians.
The alleged Marwan Barghouti assault has drawn international attention. Human rights organizations have repeatedly called for transparency in Israel’s handling of Palestinian prisoners.
As a result, pressure is growing for an independent investigation into the incident. Supporters say the truth must be revealed to ensure justice and accountability within the prison system.
