A powerful 6.0-magnitude earthquake, striking late Sunday in eastern Afghanistan, has resulted in over 1,400 confirmed fatalities, with thousands more injured and numerous villages leveled. The Taliban’s spokesperson, Zabihullah Mujahid, reported 1,411 deaths, 3,124 injuries, and over 5,400 homes destroyed just in Kunar province.
A second 5.2-magnitude aftershock further intensified damage, triggering landslides and complicating relief access.
Rescue Efforts: Facing Topography and Time
Remote, mountainous terrain and blocked roads have severely hampered aid delivery, forcing teams to travel on foot for hours to reach devastated villages.
In response, helicopters and commando units were deployed to evacuate wounded and conduct rescue operations in areas unreachable by road.
