Belgium’s New Diplomatic and Sanctions Policy

Recognition of a Palestinian State at the UN

Belgium has declared that it will formally recognize the State of Palestine during the upcoming UN General Assembly, scheduled from September 9 to 23, 2025. This decision aligns Belgium with countries like France, the UK, Canada, and Australia in amplifying pressure on Israel amid the Gaza conflict.

Twelve National-Level Sanctions Against Israel

Belgium plans to implement a suite of 12 targeted sanctions against the Israeli government, including:

Ban on imports from Israeli settlements in the occupied West Bank.

Review of public procurement policies involving Israeli companies.

Designation of extremist Israeli ministers, violent settlers, and Hamas leaders as persona non grata.

Restrictions on consular services, overflights, and transit permits.

Potential judicial prosecutions under international law.

Efforts to strengthen EU-level measures, such as suspending trade and research agreements under the EU-Israel Association Agreement.

Emergency shelters, camps, and aid coordination centers have been established in Kunar’s Khas Kunar district and nearby zones.
