Deadly Earthquake Hits Northern Afghanistan, Dozens Feared Dead
At least 20 people were reported killed after a powerful earthquake was felt across northern Afghanistan, according to local authorities. The casualty count is expected to be increased as rescue efforts are continued across the affected region. Hundreds were said to be injured, and numerous families were left displaced from their homes.
Earthquake Devastates Northern Afghanistan
The quake was recorded near Mazar-e-Sharif, one of Afghanistan’s largest cities, at around 01:00 local time on Monday (20:30 GMT on Sunday). Tremors were felt across neighboring provinces, and the city’s 500,000 residents were shaken awake by the violent movement.
Magnitude and Ongoing Rescue Efforts
The earthquake was measured at a magnitude of 6.3 with a depth of 28 km (17 miles), according to the US Geological Survey. It was categorized under the orange alert level, which indicates that “significant casualties” are likely to be recorded, and major damage can be expected.
Rescue teams were deployed by local officials to the most affected areas. However, some remote villages were cut off due to blocked roads and damaged communication lines. Heavy machinery and hand tools are being used by emergency workers to reach trapped survivors.
Hospitals were overwhelmed as injured residents were brought in for urgent treatment. Medical supplies are being rushed to quake-hit regions, and temporary shelters are being constructed for displaced families.
Authorities have warned that aftershocks may be experienced, urging people to remain outdoors until safety is confirmed.
