Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan Begins Second Term Amid Election Controversy

President Samia Suluhu Hassan was sworn in for her second term under heavy security in Dodoma on Sunday. The ceremony was conducted amid unrest after an election was declared fraudulent by the opposition.

President Samia Sworn In for Second Term

The event was held at a military parade ground instead of a public stadium. It was broadcast live on state television, while public attendance was restricted.
Samia was declared the winner with 98% of the vote by election officials. However, reports suggested that intimidation and violence were used during the process.

Election Dispute and International Concern

Concerns about transparency were expressed by international observers following the disputed election. Reports confirmed that hundreds of citizens were killed in post-election clashes. Key opposition figures were detained or prevented from running, which limited voter choice.
The opposition condemned the election results as undemocratic and unfair. Allegations of voter suppression were denied by the ruling party, which maintained that the process was conducted lawfully.
Calls for transparency and accountability were made by international organizations and human rights groups. They requested an independent investigation into the reported violence.
As a result, increasing pressure has been placed on Tanzania to ensure democratic reform. Samia’s second term is viewed as a major test of her leadership and commitment to unity.
