Modern surveillance cameras under the Safe City Project in Karachi have started producing strong results. In the last 16 days, police arrested 11 suspects with the help of facial recognition cameras. In addition, authorities recovered 31 stolen and fake vehicles in 19 days using advanced number plate recognition systems.
High-Tech Cameras Catch Wanted Suspects
Director General Safe City Authority, Asif Ejaz Shaikh, said the arrests happened between October 20 and November 6. Facial recognition cameras and the Safe City Emergency Response Vehicles (ERVs) helped track down and capture the suspects.
Police identified the arrested men as Abdul Azeem, Syed Sajjad Hussain, Abdul Mannan, Ali Abbas, Athar Hussain, Shoukat Ali, Wajid Khan, Khadim Hussain Chandio, Faizan, Shahid Ullah, and Noman. Many were already wanted for crimes like terrorism, robbery, forgery, drug dealing, and attempted murder.
Officials said Abdul Azeem faced six previous cases in various Karachi police stations. Sajjad Hussain and Shoukat Ali were wanted for kidnapping, robbery, and drug-related crimes. Faizan and Noman were also involved in narcotics and attempted murder cases.
31 Vehicles Seized Through ANPR Cameras
According to the DG, Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) cameras identified 31 vehicles with fake or stolen plates. Police recovered cars, motorcycles, and passenger buses from areas like Shaheen Complex, PIDC, Tower, and People’s Square.
These vehicles were seized between October 13 and October 31. The DG added that about 150,000 absconders are still wanted in Karachi. However, he said the expanding camera network will make it harder for criminals to hide.
