The Sindh government is set to launch a province-wide Human Papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination campaign from September 15 to 27, targeting 4.1 million girls between the ages of 9 and 14 to protect them against cervical cancer. Supported by EPI Sindh, Jhpiego, WHO, UNICEF, Gavi, and other partners, the campaign represents a significant milestone in Pakistan’s efforts to curb one of the most common and deadly cancers among women.
During a media briefing held under the themes “Protecting Girls, Preventing Cancer” and “Sehat Mand Beti, Sehat Mand Gharana” (Healthy Daughter, Healthy Family), experts stressed the urgent need for HPV vaccination. Globally, cervical cancer causes more than 348,000 deaths annually. In Pakistan, an estimated 5,000 women are diagnosed each year, with over 3,000 losing their lives, making it the second most prevalent cancer among women of reproductive age.
To ensure widespread coverage, more than 3,600 vaccination teams will operate across 30 districts, reaching schools, madrassas, communities, markets, and health centers. Mobile units will serve hard-to-reach areas, while catch-up doses will be available for those who miss the initial drive. Routine HPV immunization for nine-year-old girls is scheduled to begin in January 2026. Officials highlighted the critical role of media and community engagement in ensuring the campaign’s success.
