Adiala Verdict Ruling: Court Sentences Imran Khan, Bushra Bibi
A special court delivered the Adiala verdict on Saturday, sentencing Imran Khan and Bushra Bibi to 17 years each. The judge announced the decision during a hearing at Adiala jail. As a result, the long-running reference reached a decisive stage.
The case focused on an expensive Bulgari jewellery set. Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman gifted it during a 2021 visit. Prosecutors argued the couple bought it far below market value.
Court Decision and Sentences
Special Judge Shahrukh Arjumand heard the matter inside the jail premises. He sentenced Imran Khan to 10 years for breach of trust. In addition, the court awarded seven years for criminal misconduct.
Bushra Bibi received the same combined punishment. Therefore, both now face lengthy imprisonment. The court also imposed fines of Rs16.4 million on each.
Judges noted mitigating factors while deciding punishment. They cited Imran Khan’s age and Bushra Bibi’s status as a woman. However, the court still found sufficient grounds for conviction.
Reactions and Political Fallout
PTI strongly criticised the Adiala verdict ruling. Party leaders called the proceedings unfair and politically driven. For example, they claimed authorities blocked family members and lawyers.
Aleema Khan accused officials of rushing the decision. She alleged outside pressure influenced the outcome. PTI leaders echoed similar concerns on social media.
Government ministers welcomed the judgment. Information Minister Attaullah Tarar said the sentence would start after an earlier corruption term. He added that misuse of state gifts harmed public trust.
Legal advisers defended the process. They said evidence showed clear financial loss to the exchequer. Consequently, officials described the ruling as lawful and justified.
Imran Khan remains imprisoned since August 2023. Bushra Bibi continues serving a separate sentence. The Adiala verdict ruling has further intensified Pakistan’s political divide.
