In the first half of 2025 Africa recorded the strongest tourism growth of any region in the world, with international arrivals rising 12 percent compared to the same period in 2024. North Africa posted a 14 percent increase, while Sub-Saharan Africa climbed 11 percent.
One of the standout performers was Morocco, which experienced a 19 percent rise in international visitors thanks to popular destinations like Marrakech and Fez. In the south of the continent, South Africa continued to attract tourists with natural wonders such as Kruger National Park and cultural hubs like Cape Town.
Experts attribute this momentum to a combination of factors. Improved air connectivity and new direct routes have opened access to more African destinations from Europe, the Middle East and Asia. Several governments have also simplified visa procedures, making it easier for international travelers to explore the continent. Infrastructure upgrades in airports, hotels, and attractions are further supporting growth.
Regional travel is also playing a major role as more Africans choose to vacation within the continent, boosting cross-border tourism and local economies. Alongside this growth, many countries are focusing on sustainable tourism by investing in eco-friendly accommodations, supporting wildlife conservation, and promoting responsible travel.
United Nations Tourism Secretary General Zurab Pololikashvili praised the sector’s impact, saying the growth “contributes to local economies, jobs, and livelihoods.” He also emphasized the importance of ensuring that tourism expansion is managed in a sustainable and inclusive way.
With its mix of natural beauty, cultural diversity, and policy reforms, Africa is positioning itself as the world’s most dynamic tourism destination in 2025, with potential for even greater expansion in the years ahead.
